The Coronado City Council passed the final update for the housing element amidst California Department of Housing and Community Development violations and three years of litigation and back and forth with the state and the San Diego Association of Governments (SANDAG).

The Council members approved 10 sites for potential housing, but it doesn’t mean they are responsible for building the 912 units allotted to them by SANDAG.

The city is responsible for identifying locations that purportedly could accommodate that many residences. It would be up to property owners and developers to determine whether they choose to construct affordable dwellings.

The 10 sites that were approved for potential housing were:

  • Christ Church on 919 C Ave.
  • City owned property on 517 Orange Ave.
  • El Dorado Square on 1224 10th Street.
  • Crown Shops on 1001 C Ave.
  • The Smart & Final center on 150 B Ave.
  • A parking lot on 149 A. Ave.
  • Bayside Apartments.
  • The Coronado Police Department.
  • A former elementary school on 6th Street.
  • Navy Housing on 3632 Tulagi Road.
