Still less than halfway through the spring sports cycle, there’s a lot of time for Islander teams to continue playing well or, in the case of some teams, start to play better and gain ground in division competition.
The Islanders baseball team, which lost to Mt. Carmel in the Division II CIF championship last year, got bumped up to Division I this season. It’s still early, but the jump in competition has been felt, as Coronado is 2-4 through six games. However, league play doesn’t start for the Islanders until April 15. If they’re going to right the ship, they’ve got plenty of time to do so.
Coronado’s girls’ beach volleyball team has continued the success many of the players had in the fall on the indoor squad.
The beach roster has eight players who competed on the indoor team that went 34-9. As of March 17, the beach team is 5-2 with a 2-1 record in league, having beaten Hoover and San Diego but recently lost to Clairemont.
The girls’ lacrosse team is coming off a perfect season, one that saw the Islanders go 19-0 en route to a Division I CIF championship win. This year’s squad contains many of the players of last year’s team and includes 11 players committed to play at the collegiate level. Though it’s very early, the Islanders have already dropped two more games than they did all of last season and have a 2-2 record as of March 17.
However, Coronado has only played one San Diego opponent. The team’s two losses came to Foothill (Santa Ana) and Sacred Heart Prep (Atherton). They beat Santa Margarita (Rancho Santa Margarita), ranked No. 4 in the CIF Southern California Section, and Torrey Pines.
Last season, Coronado boys’ lacrosse made it to CIF in the Open Division as the No. 5 seed, but lost to Santa Fe Christian in the first round. The Islanders are off to a solid start to this year’s campaign, as the group is 4-3 through the first seven games.
Through the first three meets, Coronado’s track and field team has fared well. That included its most recent meet, the Viking Sunset Relays at La Jolla High School.
Senior sprinter Summer Little finished second overall in the girls’ 100-meter dash, clocking in at 12.75. Seniors Nathan Ayan and Vincent Russo finished first and second, respectively, in the 1600-meter dash, and fellow senior William Heyen placed second in the 200-meter dash.
Also placing in the top three was the 4×100-meter boys’ relay team of Xavier Marsh, Noah Jones, Ah’Mahn Oliver and Heyen. The team placed third with a finishing time of 44.67. Three of the four runners also competed in the 800 sprint medley relay (SMR), with senior Davin Collins taking first, clocking in at 1:36.
The girls’ 800 SMR team also took first, composed of Little, freshman Keanna Prentiss, senior Micaela Gistaro and junior Maya Wilson. Their time of 1:51.97 is the second fastest time in the San Diego section this season.
On the field side, sophomore Jones leapt a personal best 21’3” in the long jump to grab second place.
