Former Coronado mayor Richard Bailey is trailing by about 9% behind Nicole Crosby in a race to secure the San Diego City Council District 2 seat, which represents residents in Point Loma, Ocean Beach, Mission Bay, Midway, Bay Park and Clairemont.

Crosby takes the lead with 54.2%, or 19,694 votes, in early election results. Bailey follows behind at 45.8%, or 16,650 votes.

Bailey served two consecutive terms as the youngest mayor of Coronado, ending his leadership in November 2024 when he did not seek re-election. City Council member John Duncan won the mayoral race that year.

When Bailey launched his campaign for San Diego City Council last February after moving from Coronado to Point Loma in 2025, the former mayor said he saw a desire for more policy-focused conversation as opposed to the “performative political theatre we regularly see.”

In 2020 and 2021, Bailey donated to the Republican Party of San Diego County, and in 2024 he contributed to a few Republican congressional candidates, according to the Federal Election Commission.

Bailey re-registered in February, listing no party affiliation. He won the June primary with 35% of the vote.
