With Coronado residents contracting West Nile virus from infected mosquitoes and this year being the most local West Nile virus infection in ten years, San Diego County has outlined some steps to prevent getting the disease.
The best way is to protect from mosquito bites, the county reports. The virus is not spread from person to person but by getting bit by a mosquito carrying it.
That means using insect repellent, wearing long-sleeves and pants and making sure windows and doors have screens to keep them from coming inside.
Another way is to reduce the amount of mosquitoes around. Mosquito eggs can be full grown biting adults in just a week.
Mosquitoes lay their eggs in stagnant water, so dumping out any containers that hold water can help. This can be pet bowls, buckets or even birdbaths.
Swimming pools that aren’t maintained can also be a breeding ground for mosquito eggs.
