On Dec. 7 at 1 p.m. in the Coronado Public Library’s Winn Room, the Coronado Island Film Festival (CIFF) Student Classic Film Series is scheduled to host a family-friendly movie screening of “Scrooge.”
The movie is a 1951 British Renown Studios adaptation of Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol.” The screening will be followed by an announcement of the 2026 Student Classic Film Series schedule. This event is free and open to the public.
The Student Classic Series is designed to expose high school and middle school students to motion pictures made during the Golden Age of Hollywood from the mid-1930s to early-1960s.
The screenplay of “Scrooge,” by Noel Langley (a screenwriter for “The Wizard of Oz”), along with Brian Desmond Hurst’s direction and C. M. Pennington-Richards’ haunting black-and-white cinematography, convinces audiences of Scrooge’s transformation. He goes from bitter, friendless curmudgeon, to a man so overcome by gratitude and joy, that he finds himself gleefully shouting, “Merry Christmas!” to all within earshot.
As part of downtown San Diego’s Lions Club toy giveaway to underserved children, CIFF asks attendees to bring an unwrapped toy to the screening.
