Scientists are predicting stronger storms this winter season influenced by a Super El Niño.
The City of Coronado provides up to 10 sandbags per household to prepare and stay safe during winter storms, according to its online storm preparedness page.
“We encourage everyone (to) check it out,” said City Manager Tina Friend in September, noting additional information sharing on the city’s Facebook and Instagram. “…And stay tuned, we will be talking about this all fall.”
The city encourages residents to:
- Monitor the weather and news, and sign up for alert notifications for your phones.
- Sweep and pick up debris, leaves, and grass clippings around storm drains and curb gutters near your home. If you see clogging of the storm drain and it can be safely cleared, please remove it.
- Keep lids securely closed on trash and recycle carts when placing them out for collection. Place carts 2 to 3 feet away from the curb to avoid impeding stormwater flows on the street.
- Have a flashlight and batteries ready for power outages.
- Turn off irrigation to save water and minimize runoff before and after rain.
- Know the safest routes to and from your home or property should flooding occur.
- Slow down and do not drive, ride or walk through flood waters.
- Do not open or lift manhole covers in the event of street flooding.
- Stay away from downed power lines. Call 9-1-1 to report them.
- If told to evacuate, or if you feel unsafe, leave immediately.
- Prepare your pets.
