I love to see my dogs react to different sights and sounds. Whether it’s animal scenes from a video or a new alarm on my phone, the unfamiliar visuals and tones always prompt a unique response from my pups.
Rupert the Dalmatian recently had a run-in with a “talking cactus” and he clearly didn’t know what to make of it.

In the TikTok from @kimbo4112, the dotted dog stood in front of the toy cactus and curiously watched how it lit up and danced. You could see Rupert trying to figure out what the object was and if it posed any sort of threat. Was this thing friend or foe?
Each time Rupert attempted to communicate through mini barks and low growls, the playful plant would move and make a noise which confused the canine further. He tried different variations of grumbles and woofs to try and knock the cactus off its game. Yet as Rupert’s barks got stronger, so did the sounds from the cactus. He even tried the annoyed side eye look to intimidate the plant but to no avail.
The perplexed pooch never had a conversation like this before and wasn’t sure of his next move. At one point it became a staring contest but it’s unclear who was winning.
Followers found the dialogue between the dog and plastic plant hilarious and posted some comical comments.
“Whatever they are talking about must be very serious,” one remarked.
“Did that cactus just stare him down?” a fan asked.
“IÂ had a Dalmatian when I was younger and she always had to have the last word,” another shared.
“Rupert is definitely not seeing the funny side to the Cactus antics,” a follower pointed out.
Dalmatians have served in many roles
This breed is in the working dog class and known for their intelligence. Dalmatians served as coach dogs in the 1700s when they protected and prompted the horses that pulled fire carriages to respond to emergencies.
These canines have also worked as guard dogs and are adept in hunting and herding. Dalmatians need plenty of exercise to expend that drive to complete a task.
With all that smarts and skill in his ancestral line, Rupert may figure out that the cactus has an “off” switch.
