Some dogs have special talents that are truly mind-blowing. We’ve all seen these pups on America’s Got Talent and it’s uber impressive. Whether it’s a physical move like balancing on two paws or an intellectual gift like being able to count, there’s no telling what a canine can learn to do.
I’ve personally never seen a dog hold its breath under water until now, thanks to @chynastorm0712. I’m starting to think the Pit Bull in this video could have been a stunt double for The Little Mermaid.

Chyna the Pit Bull was enjoying a day of swimming. Her head was above the water as her paws kept her afloat, until she started acting like a mermaid.
The pretty Pit dove under the water’s surface, stood on her front paws and did a full-on underwater hand (or paw) stand! And then she did it again. And again. At one point, Chyna resurfaced holding a stick in her mouth — talk about talent!
“When I thought I rescued a ‘dog’ but all these years she has proven me wrong,” the onscreen text explained. “She isn’t a dog – she’s a fish.”
Thanks to the mammalian diving reflex, dogs can hold their breath under water. Once the face comes in contact with water, the heartbeat slows down by approximately 10 to 25 percent, which helps the body function with less oxygen. This happens with both humans and dogs.
Once the face goes below the water’s surface, the windpipe automatically shuts to prevent water from going into the lungs. In these cases, dogs can hold their breath for up to 5-10 seconds. It’s a shorter amount of time for smaller and brachycephalic dogs, while bigger pups can go up to 10 seconds.
Breeds like the Golden Retriever, Labrador, and Newfoundland are known to be natural swimmers. Brachycephalic dogs and smaller breeds like Bulldogs, Pugs, and Dachshunds find it more challenging to take a dip.
Chyna falls into the “excellent swimmer” category and may be ready for the Olympics, or at least a spot on AGT!
