Unfortunately, birds are some of the most commonly neglected pets out there. A lot of people get birds, not really prepared for what they entail. Even your “easy” pet store birds are loud, needy, and really messy – I would know, I have four of them. It only gets harder from there, too.
On Tuesday, April 15th, one recently rescued neglected Cockatoo’s healing journey continued. This video did come with a hopeful update, though, and we’re all rooting for him:

“B Plus Cockatoo Mom” is not giving herself enough credit here. This is definitely A+ behavior! I hope everything with Dino keeps going well!
If you want to, go down Dino’s mom’s Instagram page and look at every post, but be warned: you’ll probably cry and feel a little bit sick. Here’s a crash course:
- Dino was rescued in mid-January, after his previous caretaker passed away.
- He’s 40 years old and blind from severe cataracts.
- He’s been plucking his feathers for a long time, leading to some infections.
- He has to wear little sweaters to keep him from biting at the healing wounds.
He’s joined in this home by a Moluccan Cockatoo (she’s pink, it’s awesome) who was also a rescue, and they’ve become the best of friends. Magnolia has taken to rubbing her beak against Dino’s to let him know that she’s there, and he loves it:

They’re kind of in love. Originally, Dino was supposed to be a foster, but after seeing how Magnolia has responded to him, their mom knew she couldn’t let him go! Since coming home in January, Dino has made so much progress!
He still wears his little sweaters, but the self-mutilating behaviors have definitely calmed down. He’s getting all the care he needs, and pretty soon, he might even get to have cataract surgery! Nothing would be sweeter than this boy getting to see again!
