A residential fire took place in Coronado on Friday afternoon, and one person is reported dead.
Fire engines responded to a residential fire at 1421 6th Street at approximately 1:15 p.m., according to Coronado Fire Chief Jayson Summers.
“While en route, crews were informed that there was a possible trapped individual,” Summers said. “The first unit arrived on scene to find a two-story home fully involved in fire throughout the first floor. The team made an aggressive attack on the fire while conducting a search for the occupant.”
The victim was located on the first floor and pronounced deceased, Summers said.
No other injuries were reported and further details about the victim have yet to be released.
The fire was fully extinguished within 20 minutes and was contained to the structure. The cause and origin of the fire remain under investigation.
According to the City of Coronado’s designated historic resource log, 1421 6th Street was the residence of Robert Kipperman. The address was logged as a designated historic home in the city – a Spanish colonial revival style built in 1930.
Local neighbors told The Coronado News an elderly couple lived at this address and described the day’s happening as “unfortunate.”
The San Diego County Sheriff’s Bomb/Arson Unit, which provides service throughout the county to any law enforcement agency which seeks assistance, appeared on the scene as well.
Bomb/Arson unit members are certified with the FBI Bomb Data Center as bomb technicians and have received training through the State Fire Marshal as fire investigators.
The unit investigates all matters relating to arson, suspicious fires, fire injuries, fire death, explosions, explosive injuries, explosive related deaths and the recovery and safe disposal of homemade bombs and military munitions, according to its website.
At around 5:50 p.m., the southeast bound side of the street opened to cars with pedestrians walking on the sidewalk ahead of the opening.
As of 8 p.m., all emergency crews had evacuated the scene.
