Architect Rene Peralta will lead a lecture on the urban border between the United States and Mexico at the Coronado Public Library on Aug. 6 at 7 p.m. as part of the area wide celebration of the selection of San Diego and Tijuana as the 2024 Word Design Capital.

Titled “Cultural Imaginaries and Border Narratives: A Speculative Design Perspective,” Peralta’s presentation will focus specifically on the dynamic between Tijuana and San Diego.

The event, presented in collaboration with the Coronado Cultural Arts Association, will explore the transformative potential of speculative design in shaping cultural identities at the U.S.-Mexico border.

Peralta will illustrate how architects and designers can utilize speculative design to both construct and deconstruct the cultural narratives that define both physical and metaphorical borders. This unique exploration promises to shed light on the intersection of architecture, culture and identity in one of the world’s most significant border regions.
