Senior pets can end up in shelters for various reasons. Sometimes, they become orphaned when their parents pass away, and other times, they are abandoned when their people move. It can be a gut-wrenching experience for any animal, but it’s even harder for those of advanced age. It’s difficult to imagine what they must think about being in a strange place with people they don’t know.

That’s why one rescue organization is dedicated to ensuring these dogs live their best lives while waiting to find their forever families. These outstanding methods can be helpful for any pet parent who wants to keep their animals active and feeling their best.

Check out their schedule of activities in this video shared on March 5:

@youngatheartpetsAt Young at Heart, our mission isn’t to simply rescue senior dogs and cats. We’re dedicated to enriching their lives as much as possible! ✨ To maintain the overall health and happiness of a pet, it’s important to provide the right stimuli. That’s why we have an entire enrichment schedule set up to ensure that the senior pets in our care are receiving what’s needed for both their physical and emotional well-being. Some pets refuse walks, but they’ll play in the yard all day if they could. Some pets couldn’t care less about toys, but they love to be brushed. One dog will need more specialized enrichment than another. Whatever the case, our staff and volunteers work tirelessly to give each and every sweet senior the attention they require. ❤️ It is because of generous, big-hearted animal lovers like you that the senior dogs and cats of Young at Heart lead comfortable, fulfilled lives while they await their forever homes. Thank you!! 🫶 #youngatheart #youngatheartpets #seniordog #seniorcat #dog #cat #petrescue #fyp #enrichment #woodstockil

Senior pet rescue enrichment schedule

Not all dogs or cats enjoy the same things, which is why @youngatheartpets works to meet each animal’s needs on a case-by-case basis. These volunteers will do whatever it takes to make each animal happy and to keep them feeling loved as they wait for their new family to find them.

  1. Enrichment is key. This rescue provides these animals with enriching cognitive and sensory experiences, such as Kongs filled with peanut butter, snuffle mats, or treat-dispensing toys.
  2. Playtime is a must! They also get ample time to play and do the activities they enjoy.
  3. They get the animals moving. Physical exercise is another crucial component of their well-being. While some like exercising by taking walks, others like playing fetch with their toys in the yard. Not only does this help burn off energy, but it also helps keep their seniors fit.
  4. They pamper their pooches! Bodywork like massage, brushing, petting, or any loving touch is also essential for showing them they’re cared for.
  5. They keep things interesting. They also try to provide these animals with new experiences. While some dogs might enjoy watching a new show on TV, cats may enjoy viewing a game on an iPad.
  6. They keep them social. Social time is another element of their well-being. This, they say, allows them to maintain positive relationships with people.

Although no animal wants to end up in a shelter without a family of their own, this is a place of refuge for those that do. Thanks to the support of donors and the caring hearts of volunteers, these seniors can still feel loved and protected as they patiently wait for their next chapter to begin.
