The United States Section of the International Boundary and Water Commission (USIBWC) says that the average flow of wastewater from the Tijuana River into the South Bay International Wastewater Treatment Plant (SBIWTP) is currently 25.8 million gallons per day (MGD), which is higher than the design and permit limits of 25 MGD.
According to a statement issued by the USIBWC on Friday, the Mexican pump station at PB-CILA continues to remain out of operation in order to minimize the excess flows into the SBIWTP.
As a result, the transboundary flows down the Tijuana River continue to flow at 54 MGD.
The USIBWC says that it has engaged with its Mexican counterparts to manage and balance the flows across the San Diego-Tijuana wastewater infrastructure and to reduce the transboundary flows in the Tijuana River.
The USIBWC also confirmed that there are no transboundary flows at the canyon collectors. All the canyon collectors as well as Goats Canyon and Hollister pump stations are in operation.
