12 Friday: Cellist Lars Hoefs and pianist Aline Alves come back to Southern California from Brazil, presenting their Villa-Lobos Festival.
They will play a program entitled “Music of Venezuela and Brazil” on Friday, Jan. 12 at 1 p.m. in the Winn Room at Coronado Public Library. This is the second of three Villa-Lobos Festival concerts on Coronado.
The Blue Rose Trio returns to the Winn Room with music from Venezuelan composer Paul Desenne inspired by the poetry of Borges; Villa-Lobos’ radiant and exotic Fantasia Concertante; and selections from the trio’s recently released album “Brazilian Landscapes.”
The concert is free and no reservations are required. Seating is first come, first-served, general admission. The concert is presented in partnership with Coronado Arts.
13 Saturday: The Accessible Sailing fleet (KMAC Foundation) is having a volunteer training session on Saturday Jan. 13 from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Coronado Yacht Club.
They need help to continue the program, and with a busy five months coming up, are looking for volunteers. All skill levels are welcome.
17 Wednesday: The Lawrence Family Jewish Community Center (LFJCC) will present a lecture as part of the Mandelbaum lecture series at 10:30 a.m. in the Winn Room of the Coronado Public Library.
The lecture is titled: “Beyond the Beard: The Absence and Rare Presence of Women Rabbis in Feature Films and Television Series with Dr. Lawrence Baron.
17 Wednesday: “Poetry for the People” returns this year with a focus on works by U.S. poet laureates on Wednesdays from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. The class on the 17th will be held in the Ruby Room.
U.S. poet laureates serve as our nation’s official poets. They seek “to raise the national consciousness to a greater appreciation of the reading of poetry.”
We’ll discuss their poems and learn about their life highlights, while considering the techniques and use of language that distinguish these poets. Most importantly, “Poetry for the People” offers its members encouragement to offer their views, opinions and reactions to the poems, which, in turn, enriches the class for everyone present.
Register for the series at the Coronado Public Library’s website. Registration will close at 11 a.m. on Jan. 17.
18 Thursday: Coronado’s own New York Times best-selling writer, George Galdorisi, will make a presentation on Thursday, Jan. 18 at 7 p.m. in the Winn Room at Coronado Public Library about his secrets to getting published.
Longtime Coronado resident, retired Navy captain George Galdorisi, has been writing for most of his life.
Now after 16 books, including four New York Times best-sellers, as well as leading writing seminars in Coronado and throughout Southern California, he has teamed with his fellow Braveship Writers to produce a book: “Braveship Writers Tell Their Secrets: How to Write Books People Actually Read.”
George’s book has garnered excellent reviews on Amazon and elsewhere and is a thoughtful writing companion for beginning, emerging and accomplished writers. His talk will be a lively journey through the ins-and-outs of getting published across the spectrum of articles, non-fiction, fiction and other media, including how to get your work published and into the hands of readers.
George will not be selling books at this event, but if you have a copy of the book and would like to bring it to his presentation, he would be happy to sign copies.
19 January: The January meeting of the Republican Women’s Club of Coronado Crown City will be held at the Coronado Historical Association Lecture Room, 1100 Orange Ave., on Friday, Jan. 19 at 9:15 a.m.
We are excited to be showing the movie “The Big Dump” by Brett Davis and Larry Delrose. This movie has been highly praised for its excellent description of the sewage crisis at the border.
All Republican women are encouraged to attend. Men are also welcome and encouraged to become associate members. Independent and undecided voters are welcome.
20 Saturday: The Avanti Flute Choir will present a Winter Concert on Saturday, Dec. 20 at 3 p.m. in the Winn Room at Coronado Public Library, featuring works by Beethoven, Queen, Via, Chamberlain and more. A reception will follow.
