On Wednesday, December 27, an animal sanctuary shared an emotional video from a recent rescue they performed in California. Reject Ranch Sanctuary had received a call of an abandoned pig on the side of the highway, and they knew they needed to help.
This pig had been alone in the shrubbery for nearly 2 weeks, interspersed only with visits from his finders bringing food. We can’t imagine how scared he was out there!

Oh my goodness, what a sad story! The sanctuary said they believe the pig might have been dumped by someone who believed they had a miniature pig. He was very calm around the people and had clearly been taken care of beforehand. We’re just so glad he’s getting a happy ending now!
Sanctuaries are always stepping up to help out animals in need, and we couldn’t be more thankful. This work saves so many innocent animals from sad fates!
Sanctuaries serve many purposes
Working at or volunteering with animal sanctuaries is a noble way to have a positive impact on others. Not only do these nonprofit organizations rescue animals from abuse, neglect, and exploitation, but they serve a few other purposes as well!
Some sanctuaries provide varying degrees of rehabilitation for their animals. Often, volunteers and staff will provide their animals with massages, stretches, and simple exercises to rehabilitate previous injuries or slow the impact of their age. In fact, rehabilitation can also refer to emotional healing, as many of these animals must overcome past traumas and re-learn to trust humans.
Additionally, sanctuaries are usually involved in educational efforts on proper animal care and the harsh impact of the meat and dairy industries. The way each sanctuary educates the public varies, but at the very least, most places have some educational materials on their website. Some sanctuaries even allow visitors who get the chance to witness firsthand the stories of animals who have been rescued from exploitation and cruelty. It’s a very emotional experience!
Last, sanctuaries are advocates. They act as a voice for animals when advocating for more protections for animals and harsher penalties for animal abuse. Through public education programs, outreach efforts, and partnerships with advocacy organizations, sanctuaries raise awareness about the plight of animals. Since animals can’t speak up for themselves, it’s so important for them to have a vocal and passionate ally. Sanctuaries are happy to fill the role!
Thanks to Reject Ranch Sanctuary, this pig will be able to live the rest of his life in a peaceful environment where he’s treated like a king. We can’t wait to see how much he thrives in his new home!
