The City of Coronado will close its Aquatics Center and pool for up to four months beginning in February for renovations to the pool equipment.

Constructed in 2006, the Coronado Aquatics Center and pool are currently in need of immediate repair.

Following the City Council’s authorization of a contract with California Waters last week, renovations in the Aquatics Center and Pool Improvements Project are scheduled to begin as early as Feb. 5, 2024, according to the current draft schedule.

The actual closure dates will be determined by the contractor’s schedule, which will be available in early February and may be further impacted by inclement weather.

These renovations include: replacing the pools’ 18-year-old plaster, gutter grating, pool deck and associated drainage; repairing floors, walls, tile, grout and repairing damaged concrete gutters.

Inspection and repair of the recreation pool pump also will require the draining of the pool water. Replacement of the pool deck, competition pool bulkhead, and two internal heat exchangers in the recreation pool heater are also necessary, according to the city.

Summer reopening

The Public Services & Engineering Department, Recreation & Golf Services, and Aquatic Design Group determined the project scope with a cost projection of $4.5 million, included in the fiscal year 2022-23 Capital Improvement Program, according to the City.

The City says it “understands the substantial impact to the community during the closure and appreciates the community’s patience while the project is completed.”

The City will reopen the Coronado Aquatics Center and pool once construction is completed per the proposed construction schedule and it estimates that the repairs and upgrades to the center will take and be completed by July 2024.

Current pool passes will be paused until the center reopens. Alternative swimming opportunities can be found at the City’s website.
