The Coronado City Council has decided to move forward with renovation plan four for the Winn Room remodel. This decision has been years in the making.

Here’s a timeline of the process.

  • Jan. 7, 2020: The Coronado City Council approved an agreement with M.W. Steele Group, Inc. to develop a feasibility study regarding design options and associated cost estimates ranging from basic/low, middle/medium, and “visionary”/high for the Winn Room remodel.
  • June 3, 2020: An initial community stakeholder meeting informed M. W. Steele about the shortcomings of the existing space and the desired improvements. This community stakeholder group started with five concepts and eliminated a number of options and features. The stakeholder input helped develop a range of initial design concepts.
  • Nov. 17, 2020: The Council approved the community stakeholder group to solicit broad-based community input via public outreach and revisit the cost estimates for opportunities to reduce the total project budget.
  • March 24, 2021: Two refined concepts were presented based upon stakeholder and community outreach feedback at an open public outreach town hall meeting via Zoom. The majority supported the Option B design concept version that steps into the park.
  • May 4, 2021:  Library and Public Services & Engineering staff presented the results of the community outreach data to the City Council with a request to proceed with the schematic design phase for Option B. The City Council redirected staff to perform a needs assessment that clearly defined the types of uses and spaces needed in the community and an analysis of the community’s current meeting and performance space types and utilization.
  • July 20, 2021: The Winn Room Subcommittee was created by the City Council to direct staff to create an Ad Hoc Subcommittee and if additional concept drawings were necessary, authorize the city manager to contract with M. W. Steele group to create additional plans.
  • August, 2021: The Ad Hoc Subcommittee first met in August of 2021, and then continued to meet following that meeting, in order to develop a needs assessment and finalize the four remodel options.
  • Dec. 12, 2023: The four remodel options were presented at a City Council special workshop. This was the first Winn Room remodel discussion open to the public.
  • Aug. 20, 2024: The subcommittee came back with the refined and finalized options. City Council passed a motion 3-2 for option four. Council members Casey Tanaka and Mike Donovan voted against option four.
