At the Eastern League Cross Country Championships at Morley Field on Nov. 2, the
usual suspects led the boys and girls teams for Coronado High School, according to Coach George Green.
Coronado placed third for the season behind La Jolla and Our Lady of Peace in the girls competition while the boys had two runners in the varsity race.
Next for the Islanders is the CIF championships on Nov. 11 at Morley Field, where the squads will have varsity teams of seven boys and seven girls.
Roos, Ayan top boys runners
For the boys, senior Raphael Roos and sophomore Nathan Ayan were the only Coronado runners in the varsity race and each responded with personal records, Green said.
Roos clocked 17:30 over the challenging 3.11 City Conference course to knock 24 seconds off his previous best time. Ayan, meanwhile, topped that with a 42-second improvement with a time of 17:50.
Both received one of the coveted championship medals (top 15), with Roos placing 11th and Ayan 14th.
Maske, Everitt top girls runners
In the girls’ varsity race, Morgan Maske improved her personal best by 41 seconds while placing seventh with a time of 20:44.
Green said what was more impressive was that her time was over 2 minutes faster than
what she ran as a freshman.
Coronado’s second finisher, Gwynne Everitt, just missing the podium in 16th place while running at 22:13.
Rounding out Coronado’s scoring were Maeson Everitt, Carly DeVore, and Nadia Roos. An ailing Jaya Jost was the team’s pusher.
Top JV runners
Green said the boys’ JV race was pretty fast because a varsity cross country team consists of only seven runners. Because of this limitation, many boys on the other teams had to run in the JV race.
Coronado’s top runner was Jack Letcher, who placed fourth in 18:50, followed by Xavier Marsh, Jack Shumaker, Tyler Horton, Austin Litteral, Oscar Alicandri, Anton Youngblood, Chace Smith, Oliver Surdykowski, and Woody Smith.
In the girls’ JV race, Stefanie Romero, Mia Sarchi, and Edie Alicandri picked up JV medals (top 25).
State meet on Nov. 25
In addition to the championship ranks on Nov. 11, the Islanders will compete for berths to the state meet on Nov. 25 at Woodward Park in Fresno, Green said.
The top three teams will advance in Coronado’s division, and the girls’ team is one of the favorites to make the cut, he said.
He also said Roos and Ayan have a shot as individual runners.
Green noted that once the top three teams are determined, the top five runners not on one of the three advancing teams also advance, provided they place in the top 12 overall.
