As we approach the holiday that is typically celebrated with turkey, we might find it hard to look at them… Unless they’re little cute babies, in which case we can’t help ourselves. They’re just too precious!
On Friday, October 20th, one animal sanctuary shared a day in the life of a new baby turkey, and you just have to see it:
@thegentlebarn It’s so rare to see baby turkeys 😠Brave has been such a good mom, always nearby her baby Stella to show her everything she needs to know. We love watching this little turkey baby learn about life as she grows at our farm animal sanctuary 🥹
The Gentle Barn Sanctuary deserves all of the applause, in my eyes. Every video I see from them just melts my heart!

Baby turkeys hatch from their eggs about a month after being laid by the hens. When they’re born, poults grow up pretty fast: they’re walking within just a few hours and are leaving the nest within the day. In the wild and in captivity, they don’t go far: poults stay with their mothers for at least a few weeks – but sometimes a few months – after hatching.
During this time, as we see in the video, the hen teaches her poult everything she knows: how to find the best bugs, how to run fast, how to avoid predators, and more. Since these two are in a sanctuary together, they probably won’t ever be separated, which is not a problem at all. Who doesn’t want to have their mom around all the time, especially when she’s as loving and caring as Brave is?
Stella has a ways to go before she reaches maturity: turkeys enter “adulthood” at around 8-9 months of age. In captivity, turkeys can live up to 10 years as long as they’re kept in good conditions. She’ll have plenty of time to grow up with her mom, and maybe she’ll even have some babies of her own along the way!
