For the twelfth straight year, Rady Children’s Hospital Auxiliary is hosting the Coronado Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving Day.

The trot is a 5K that starts and ends at Tidelands Park. The route first goes south to the Coronado Bridge viewpoint then heads north along the San Diego Bay toward Centennial Park, before turning around again to end at Tidelands Park.

Last year’s race had 1,100 participants. Megan Allen, the marketing manager for Easy Day Sports, the company that works with Rady Children’s Hospital to put on the event, predicts there will be closer to 1,200 this year.

The trot starts at 8 a.m. and there will be three different starting groups: fast, fit and fun.

This year, all net proceeds will go to the Orthopedics and Scoliosis Center at Rady Children’s Hospital-San Diego.

The ambassador for this year’s trot is Elizabeth Lewis, a senior at Academy of Our Lady of Peace. Lewis suffered from Perthes disease, a disease that limits blood flow to the hip joint. Lewis underwent multiple surgeries at Rady Children’s, and now plays multiple sports. Lewis will be a speaker at the trot.

Prior to the race, there will be a pre-race warmup at 7:35 a.m. Following the trot is an awards ceremony at 9:15 for the overall male and female winners, as well as winners of each age bracket.

“There’s no better way to celebrate Thanksgiving, just looking around at the community, at your friends, just excited to take on the day, start the day off with a nice little community, then eat lots of yummy food later in the day,” said Allen.

To register for the trot, visit https://www.rchacoronadoturkeytrot.com/. The current price of admission is $65 with a $4.90 fee. On Nov. 16, that price will jump to $75. For those who can’t show up in person, there’s an option to run a virtual 5K for $55 with a $4.30 fee. Kids five and under run free.
