Around this time of year, we’re always reminded that according to old superstitions, black cats are often considered bad luck. But as a black cat mom myself, I know my kitty is nothing but good luck — and that with how much she loves pumpkin-flavored everything, Halloween is really the season when she truly thrives.
Another black cat who is thriving this fall? Lucipurr, the unofficial mascot of Salem, Massachusetts, who is finally getting the national attention he deserves after becoming beloved by locals and tourists who visit Witch City alike.
@bostonglobeMeet Lucipurr, a 14-pound black cat with fans who scour the streets of Salem to find him. He also has a Facebook page, where his 11,000 members post photos of recent sightings and links to donate to the cat rescue group Peabody Animal Life Savers. Lucipurr started to gain fans after his first appearance in the city’s annual Haunted Happenings Grand Parade in 2023, when he was still a kitten. But he’s just one of a handful of Salem felines that have risen to kitty stardom. In this report shared by the Boston Globe‘s official TikTok account on Tuesday, October 21, we get to meet Lucipurr and his dad, Landon Blais, who couldn’t be prouder of his spooky, four-legged son.
The cat first came to fame as a kitten in 2023, when he walked in the annual Haunted Happenings Grand Parade. Since then, Lucipurr has become famous, and even those who travel to Salem from far away keep an eye out, hoping to catch a glimpse of him.
Each year during the Halloween season, Landon walks around with Lucipurr, and he seems to really soak up all the attention (and extra cuddles and pets) from those who are excited to spot him. And now, Lucipurr is making a difference for cats everywhere as he and his dad encourage people to donate to local shelters when they meet.
“He ended up being a great ambassador for the shelters, showing that black cats are just as friendly and lovable as all the other ones,” Landon said.
Lucipurr has a thriving Facebook fan page
If you aren’t from the Salem area, this might be your first time hearing about Lucipurr, but online, he’s pretty well known — Lucipurr’s Facebook fan page has more than 11,000 followers, who frequently share photos from their encounters with Landon and his cat.
Speaking with a local NBC affiliate, Landon shared how quickly Lucipurr became a star.
“Someone took a picture and it went crazy, then I realized how good it would be,” he said. “He’s been a great ambassador for the rescues and stuff to show black cats are awesome. They’re not bad luck, they’re good luck.”
I couldn’t agree with him more — and it has to be extra good luck for someone to spot this adorable cat during a visit to Salem.
