On Sept. 6, the Coronado High cross country team headed to Dana Point to compete in the 2025 Dana Hills Invitational. For the second week in a row, Vincent Russo and Morgan Maske led the charge.Â
Russo was the best finisher for the men’s team, setting a PR in the 3-mile with a time of 15:33. In a heat of 88 runners, Russo finished in fifth place. Not far behind was Nathan Ayan, who also set a PR with a time of 16:28, finishing in 18th. Andrew Buck and Anton Youngblood finished within six seconds of each other, with Buck posting an 18:04 and Youngblood finishing at 18:10. Sophomore Ziggy Raunig finished 47 seconds later to round out the scoring for Coronado in the men’s varsity heat.Â
Four Coronado runners competed in the boys’ freshman and sophomore heat: Russo’s younger brother Evan, Finley Maske, Sebastian Tamariz and Jameson Laaperi. Of 110 runners competing, Evan Russo finished in sixth. Maske followed 46 seconds later and was the 20th racer to finish. Tamariz and Laaperi finished in 47th and 83rd, respectively.
Following a PR at the Ravens Invitational, Morgan Maske PR’d yet again, by 23 seconds, posting a time of 18:36 and a seventh-place finish. Carly DeVore (21:53) and Nadia Roos (22:13) finished within four spots of each other, in 37th and 40th out of 77 runners.
Coronado had a strong showing in the girls’ junior varsity heat. Only two runners represented the Islanders in this heat, Vivian Scott and Lily Humphrey, but they finished in fifth and ninth place, respectively, out of 60 competitors.
To round things out, Teaghan Carpenito and Paige Carpenito ran in the frosh/soph heat and finished in 24th and 40th place, respectively. Hanna Burns also competed, but due to a misdirection, she wasn’t able to get a mark.
