My dogs love music. Both my Dachshund and Pug mix prefer light hits or classical, sometimes even opera or show tunes. But definitely not heavy metal or anything loud and chaotic. As much as they enjoy listening to some soft melodies, my pups don’t sing along to any song. Regardless of the pitch or tone, they don’t join in. Maybe they’re self-conscious of their singing voices.
There are those poetic pooches who love to harmonize with a good tune. This Dalmatian clearly has some vivacious vocals and decided to show them off during a day in the park.

In the TikTok from @bigsisadvice13, the Dalmatian was spending the afternoon in New York City’s iconic Central Park. Strolling by one of the outdoor tunnels, the dotted dog came across a saxophone player working his magic on the instrument.
The Dalmatian decided to add some singing to accompany the musician and belted out some beautiful bars. The sax player appreciated the backup vocals and seemed to jam along with the crooning canine.
Why do dogs ‘sing’?
It’s quite common for dogs to howl — or “sing” — along to certain notes or frequencies. Their ancestral line to wolves gives them this instinct. Wolves communicate with each other by howling. It’s how they let other pack members know of their location and they also use it as a tool to assemble the pack. Another reason wolves howl is to warn other animals that are closing in on their turf.
This type of vocalization is contagious — when one wolf howls, the pack joins in. You may notice this scenario in your own environment. If a dog in your neighborhood howls, several other pups follow suit.
Canines actually have a sense of pitch, according to research. Meaning, as more wolves or dogs join in the howling, they each change their tone so everyone is howling their own individual note. Sometimes you may notice your dog howling without any music or sirens in the background. Since canines can pick up higher frequencies than humans, they are probably singing along to something you’re not able to hear.
Maybe next time, this talented Dalmation may try harmonizing with a full orchestra.
