Over the course of thousands of years, domestic dogs have undergone natural evolutionary changes along with intentional selective breeding. This has yielded our modern-day canine companions, blessed with a natural desire to live in close harmony with humans.
Not only have dogs acquired the cognitive ability to follow human pointing gestures and interpret our emotional cues, but they’ve also developed highly expressive facial musculature, enabling the characteristic “puppy eyes,” an expression that elicits caregiving responses from humans.
Interestingly, a study conducted by Waller et al. found that shelter dogs who raised their inner “eyebrows” had a significantly higher likelihood of adoption. How adorable is that?
With dogs offering us so much in terms of loyalty, comfort and joy in our lives (nothing beats being greeted by a happy dog when coming home from work), it’s hard not to feel a deep appreciation for sharing our homes with these wonderful creatures. And what better way to show it than to give our canine companions their own celebration?
Introducing International Dog Day
International Dog Day is the ultimate way of saying thank you for our dogs’ thousands of years of loyalty, love and eyebrow magic.
Celebrated every year on August 26, International Dog Day is a day meant to honor all dogs, no matter the shape, size or breed, and to encourage adoptions for the many dogs in need of finally finding their forever home.
And, of course, as with many other meaningful traditions, dedicating a special day to dogs comes with its own warm and inspiring origin story.
This day was first founded in 2004 by Colleen Paige, a pet and family lifestyle expert, animal rescue advocate, dog trainer, behavior consultant and author. She’s also the founder of several other holidays, including National Puppy Day, National Mutt Day, National Cat Day and National Wildlife Day.
But why does International Dog Day fall on August 26? This was a memorable day for Paige, as the adoption of her first dog, Sheltie, fell exactly on this date.
Initially, this “pawesome” day was known as National Dog Day, but as its celebration became more and more recognized, it was renamed International Dog Day and is now celebrated across the globe.
How to celebrate International Dog Day
In honor of International Dog Day, you’re likely looking for some ways to celebrate your furry roommate, who never pays your rent or mortgage but gives back so much in happy tail wags and sloppy kisses.
Sure, there are many classic ways to celebrate this important day, such as buying your dog a new enrichment toy, taking him on a sniffing adventure or baking him some gourmet dog-friendly treats worthy of a canine Michelin star.
But sometimes, the most meaningful gesture doesn’t require the pressure of elaborate plans, big shopping sprees or culinary skills. The one and only essential ingredient that shouldn’t be missing from the big picture? You.
Now, imagine combining all of these little joys into a single experience: your presence, your dog’s favorite snacks, a treasure hunt–style sniffing adventure and a magical treat rainfall, all conducted in the comfort of your living room or backyard.
This isn’t just a celebration—it’s the Great Canine Snack Quest, an interactive experience so perfectly designed for canine happiness it could have been invented by dogs themselves … if only dogs had opposable thumbs!
This game is simple, fun and utterly irresistible. It’s one of those fun things dog owners may wish to film, post and tag their friends in, sparking a viral movement of sniffing, leaping and joyful chaos.
Trust me, once the game starts and the treats start falling, you’ll see tails, tongues and cameras flying in every direction.
The Great Canine Snack Quest
I’ve always felt that the popular saying “the best way to a man’s heart is through his stomach” is perfectly applicable to dogs too.
After all, we can’t deny it: After thousands of years of cohabitation, dogs have perfected the art of food-based bonding, because most likely, food has played a primary role in the domestication process, building a bridge between human and canine hearts.
As a primary reinforcer, food is inherently rewarding to dogs. This is precisely why the Great Canine Snack Quest is such a great way to celebrate International Dog Day.
By combining your dog’s love of food with interactive play, sniffing, problem-solving and your presence, you create an experience that’s far more enriching than an expensive gourmet dog biscuit could ever be.
How to organize the game
Here’s a full step-by-step guide on how to organize the quest, including setup, timing, treat placement and tips.
Step 1: Choose the perfect area
Pick an area that’s free of distractions so that your dog can focus on his quest. This can be your backyard, living room or even a small section of a safely fenced park if your dog isn’t easily distracted.
Step 2: Create a mix of treats
Mix a variety of dog treats trail-mix style. Pick treats that your dog loves. Want to make an impact and share some infinite love with dogs in need? Purchase treats from companies that donate to local shelters.
For example, every time you purchase a bag of grain-free treats from Give Pet, they’ll donate enough treats for at least 10 shelter dogs. How wonderful is that?
Additionally, Rescue Treats produces baked, all-natural dog treats and donates their profits to dog rescues, and Love Bites donates 40% of its net profits to animal rescues and shelters and partners with a new animal rescue or shelter each month.
Step 3: Organize the treasure hunt
Now it’s time to prepare the Snack Quest battleground. Have a helper hold your dog on leash, or if trained to, ask your dog to hold a “down/stay” while you scatter a few treats in several easy hiding spots.
For example, if played indoors, you may place some treats on the windowsill, behind the couch, under paper cups, inside puzzle feeders, under tables, behind the legs of chairs and around corners.
Once you’ve hidden several treats around, now’s the time to release your dog from the “down/stay” or have your helper unclip the leash. Announce the game with fanfare by saying something like, “Behold! The Great Canine Snack Quest begins!”
Bonus points if you wear a wizard hat or crown. Your dog likely won’t care (unless he’s scared of hats—in which case, avoid wearing hats at all costs), but the internet certainly will!
Step 4: Make it rain (treats)
Once your dog is done sniffing and searching and has found all of the hidden treats, hit them with the surprise of their lives: the treat rainfall!
Basically, call your dog’s name, and once you have his attention, tell him how much you adore having him in your life, then toss a handful of kibble or treats into the air so they flutter down like manna from the snack heavens. Watch your dog delightfully enjoy the firework-style “sky magic” and happily scavenge all the tasty treats for a grand finale.
Want to add a little bit of training? Ask your dog to sit or lie down or perform a cute trick before the final rainfall.
Make sure you record everything and post your masterpiece with the hashtag #GreatCanineSnackQuestChallenge, tag your friends and dare them to create their own version of it.
Why dogs will love it
The game combines several highly desired elements, such as sniffing, hunting for food, pouncing on it and eating, all in your loving presence.
Every search for hidden treats is like a mini-victory from your dog’s perspective, triggering that satisfying surge of dopamine that says, “This is so awesome!”
Meanwhile, your dog will enjoy you cheering him on while you’re engaging all his senses, sharpening his problem-solving and giving him a reason to happily bounce around with excitement.
The best part? It’s all ridiculously easy to set up. Your dog will do the wagging, you’ll do the hiding and tossing and everyone will be happy. It’s the perfect kind of game to play on International Dog Day.
Happy treat hunting!
