The Coronado Swim Series will host the 67th annual Liberty Celebration Swim in Glorietta Bay on July 5, with participants competing in a 250-meter, half-mile, one-mile, or 3K race.
The event, previously called the Open Water Race, was held at Coronado Central Beach until 2023, when it was forced to be moved due to fallout from the Tijuana sewage crisis. Race director Peter McVey said the bay provides a safe alternative.
“The situation hasn’t seemed to improve, and the beaches continue to be impacted, but the bay has offered a fun, safe alternative for the event and we are thankful for the city of Coronado’s continued support,” he said.
Online registration closes July 5 at 8 a.m. for all four distance options. The 250-meter dash is $29; the half-mile is $39; the one-mile is $49; and the 3K is $59. All proceeds from this event will go toward supporting Coronado Swim Team Elite.
Historically, the race has had many elderly swimmers who competed year after year, but McVey said COVID caused a drop in numbers.
“After COVID we lost connection with many of our legacy senior swimmers,” McVey said. “We were forced to host the event virtually. We do have dedicated athletes who are repeat participants, competing into their late 70s and early 80s.”
For those who have already registered, pre-race packet pick up is July 3 from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at Coronado City Pool. Race day check in is at 7 a.m. at Glorietta Bay Park.
