Over 20 athletes from Coronado High School qualified for the San Diego CIF Division 3 track and field championships on May 17, and senior sprinter Lauren Gilhooly took home four gold medals.
Individually, Gilhooly won the 100- and 200-meter dash events. She was also joined by Maya Wilson, Micaela Gistaro and Summer Little on the victorious 4×100 and 4×400 relay teams.
This group eclipsed their own school record set earlier in the year in the 4×100, ranking them No. 1 in the City Conference, No. 3 in the San Diego section and No. 24 in the state of California. In the 4×400, the team broke a school record that had previously stood since 2003.
Nathan Ayan was also a multiple medalist. He finished second in the 800-meter dash with a personal record time. He was joined by Jack Letcher, Vincent Russo and Andrew Buck to place second in the 4×800-meter relay. The team’s time of 8:32.08 is a school record and ranks them first in the Central League.
Other Islander athletes making the awards podium included Gistaro and Wilson, who finished fifth and sixth in the 400-meter dash, clocking times of 58.87 and 60.11 seconds, respectively. Freshman Claudia Wagner finished fifth in the triple jump with a personal record leap of 33’1”. Little finished sixth in the 100-meter dash, notching a time of 12.65 seconds, a personal record.
