12 Saturday: The Friends of the Coronado Public Library is hosting the 53rd annual Spring Book Fair — a one day event — on Saturday, April 12, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in front of the Coronado Public Library.
The fair will offer thousands of books across every genre, plus unique gifts and collectibles. Shoppers can browse selections outside the library, inside at the lobby bookstore and at Second Hand Prose Bookstore on D Avenue. The event will also offer face painting for kids and a coffee stand.
13 Sunday: The deadline has been extended until April 13 for the “Alice: Illustrating Wonderland” art contest. This summer, the Coronado Public Library will host an exhibit celebrating 160 years of the 1865 novel, “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.”
Artists of all ages are invited to create a two-dimensional piece of artwork depicting a character or scene from “Wonderland” in the following mediums: pencil, ink, watercolor, acrylic, oil, digital art and mixed media. Ten pieces from each age category will be featured in the exhibit and winners will receive prizes. Visit artist.callforentry.org for more information.
16 Wednesday: The Coronado Public Library, in partnership with the Coronado Island Film Festival, presents Film Forum Coronado, taking place the first and third Wednesday of each month at 6 p.m. in the library’s Winn Room.
Film expert Ralph DeLauro provides a brief introduction to each film and leads a discussion afterwards, often including pointers about how lighting or camera angles contribute to a scene’s mood or propel the story. The film being featured on April 16 is “To Catch a Thief.”
19 Saturday: Middle schoolers, grades sixth through eighth, can join Emerald Keepers’ high school interns for a fun-filled morning at Coronado High School’s community garden to learn about the importance of protecting the environment. From 10-12 a.m., campers will enjoy outdoor activities, arts and crafts, and interactive lessons on sustainability. Visit emeraldkeepers.org to register.
19 Saturday: Alessandro Palermo, a professor at UC San Diego’s Jacob’s School of Engineering, will be presenting on the science behind bridges at 11 a.m. in the Winn Room of the Coronado Public Library.
20 Sunday: Resurrection Lutheran Church of Coronado will sponsor the annual Easter Sunrise Service on Coronado Beach. The service will be held at the north end of Ocean Boulevard across from Sunset Park (101 Ocean Boulevard) on Sunday, April 20 at 6 a.m. Reverend Timothy Eichler, retired U.S. Navy chaplin, will preside over the service. Special music will be provided by the Coronado Ukulele Club and Russ Peck.Â
