Coronado High School’s Lauren Gilhooly won the girls’ 100-meter and 200-meter dashes at the Elmer Runge Invitational track meet on March 1, leading a short-handed Islander team and earning honors as the event’s top female athlete.

Coach Cameron Gary said about a third of the Coronado High squad didn’t make the trip to Patrick Henry High School due to many players not having completed their training programs yet.

Gilhooly, a senior sprinter who already is committed to Cal Berkeley, won the girl’s 100-meter dash and the 200-meter dash with times of 12.09 and 24.73, respectively. Both are the fastest times in the outdoor San Diego CIF section so far this year.

Gilhooly also participated in the girl’s 4×100-meter relay alongside junior Micaela Gistaro, sophomore Maya Wilson, and freshman Claudia Wagner. The foursome clocked a time of 50.44 seconds, the fastest time of the day and the fourth fastest time in the San Diego CIF section.

Gistaro also finished second in the 400-meter dash with a personal record time of 59.67 seconds. For the boys, junior Nathan Ayan placed third in the men’s 800-meter with a time of 2:05.

The Islanders boys’ relay also saw success, with the 4×100-meter team, consisting of senior David Castillo, and juniors Davin Collins, William Heyen, and Mason Gibbs winning their heat and placing fourth overall with a time of 45.06 seconds.
