The 15th annual San Diego Storytelling Festival on March 15, free and open to the public, is slated with a full day of workshops, open mics, panels, concerts and all things storytelling.

For the fourth year in a row, the Storytelling Festival’s home base will be at the Coronado Public Library.

“It’s beautiful, historic, and the perfect place to tell stories,” Marilyn McPhie, the president of the Storytellers of San Diego, said.

McPhie highlighted the event as a full day of storytelling opportunities where attendees can come for an hour, or stay all day.

Several professional storytellers will share a wide variety of stories — personal, historic, fairy tales, and more. There will also be workshops available for those interested in honing their own storytelling skills.

Featured storytellers include Collin Urwin, an author, singer, songwriter and storyteller from Northern Island in Ireland, and Vicki Juditz, known for her impactful personal stories which have won many awards from The Moth.

A group of teen musicians from the Coronado School of the Arts will join in with musical interludes, and several of the storytellers will add their music — harp and guitar — to the mix.

“‘Storytelling’ is a word that is on everyone’s lips these days,” McPhie said. “Scientific studies reveal the importance of storytelling as a life skill. Whether it’s in job interviews, public presentations, school reports, family gatherings, or civic meetings, being able to tell an engaging story is essential. Storytelling is entertainment, of course — but it’s much, much more.”

This year, a section on “Woman and the military” will feature a group of local women sharing their experiences. And, there will be special sessions on stories for kids and stories told by elementary students.
