If it was possible, I would adopt every homeless dog in the world — and I know I’m not the only dog lover out there who feels this way. Unfortunately, that goal just isn’t a realistic one for any of us, but I can say that all of my pets have come from the local shelter, and I’m proud to help. I admire anyone who is willing to open up their home to a dog in need, and that includes the one in the video below — but not nearly as much as her dog admires her.

As dog mom @juliaelisssa explained in this video she shared on TikTok on Wednesday, February 12, Onyx has a very sweet ritual. Every time she puts his leash on him so they can head out to go for a walk, he tilts his head back to give her kisses. How sweet is he?!
Only Onyx knows the real reason he does this, but I suspect that it has something to do with just how grateful he is to her for giving him a home and so much love.
Onyx is considered an Aspin, or a dog who is native to the streets of the Philippines. In an earlier video, his mom explained that she found him when he needed a home while she was living there, but it took a while (and a lot of dealing with red tape) for her to be able to bring him over to Canada after she moved back home.
Fortunately, they’re back together now… and if all those pre-walk kisses are any indication, Onyx would prefer that they’re never apart again!

If you’ve never heard of Aspins before, you’re not alone — it’s likely that only people who have spent time in the Philippines (or know someone who did) are familiar with this breed of dog.
Aspins are essentially dogs who roamed freely on the streets in the Philippines, as Dog Pack notes. That’s why they tend to be “mutts,” and the site mentions that there’s more of an effort for them to be recognized as their own breed, so stay tuned — we might be hearing more about these sweet, loyal dogs soon, even in the United States.
Aspins were once referred to as “Askal,” which comes from the Tagalog phrase “Asong Kalye,” meaning “street dog.” More recently, there’s been a push to refer to them as Aspins instead, since the original term is more derogatory.
It may have been a long journey to get Onyx to Canada with his mom, but it certainly seems like he appreciates it.
