This year’s rendition of the Coronado girls’ basketball team is nearly unrecognizable. While the 2023-2024 campaign was not an easy one – with a final game record of 3-14 – this year’s team is rounding out the season with a scorching 14-2 record as of Feb. 7.

Head Coach John Coolidge said that the unique make-up of the roster helps his squad have a level of athleticism that not all teams can match.

“Having players from other sports helps because of the athleticism, speed and foot work that helps in all sports,” he said. “Our younger players have played softball, soccer and lacrosse together since middle school.”

Coolidge said that the team’s identity on the court is tied to this compilation of well-rounded, multi-sport athletes.

“Defensively we play hard when in a zone. Long arms and quick hands get a lot of turn overs,” he said. “Our full court press needs some work, but with our speed we get a lot of steals.”

Freshman Gabby Fichter leads the team in both steals and scoring, and Coolidge said she is a “very confident player for her age.” She has made multiple game-winning shots this year.

Despite the team’s performance to this point, her performance, and the buzz surrounding the team, Fichter was rather nonchalant when referring to the season.

“As of right now, we are just having fun, but we’ll see where playoffs take us,” she said.

As the team hopes to continue to keep their winning streak alive, the player Coolidge described as the “glue,” sophomore Charlie Reyman, said the team is like her family and she is looking forward to their chance to make something happen in the post season.

“I’m still so proud of this team; it’s come so far from last year,” she said.
