On Friday, Sept. 27 at 1 p.m., pianist Vania Pimentel will perform a captivating selection of Brazilian music as part of the Coronado Public Library’s Autumn Concert Series.
The program will feature a rich variety of pieces from renowned Brazilian composers, including Chiquinha Gonzaga, Ernesto Nazareth, Heitor Villa-Lobos, Francisco Mignone, Camargo Guarnieri and more. The performance will highlight iconic Brazilian styles, from folk tunes to tangos and dances, offering a musical journey through Brazil’s diverse cultural landscape.
Vania Pimentel, born and raised in Brazil, has a bachelor’s degree in music and another bachelor’s degree in philosophy, as well as a master’s degree in piano performance and pedagogy.
Her doctoral dissertation was on Brazilian toccatas, and her CD, “Brazilian Toccatas and Toccatas,” was praised by the Brazilian Academy of Music.
Her first award at a piano competition was at the age of seven in Brazil. Her top awards are from J.S.Bach International Piano Competition in Paris, 1984, and Jaen Competition in Spain, 1982. She has performed recitals at Palomar College, at the libraries of Fallbrook, Coronado, Encinitas, Carmel Valley, the Athenaeum of La Jolla and chamber music at the Merc of Temecula.
She also performs frequently in Brazil. Last year she presented a solo recital during the Music Week of Lapinha and last April at the Chapel Santa Maria in Curitiba. Currently, she lives in Miami.
All concerts in the series are free thanks to the support of the Friends of the Coronado Public Library. The Winn Room doors will open to the public 15 minutes prior to the performance.
