- The scientific name of a giant panda is the Ailuropoda melanoleuca.
- They live in the mountains of Southwestern China in old-growth forests.
- Pandas spend about 12 hours a day eating bamboo.
- Because of their bamboo diet, they have the most jaw strength of any bear.
- Babies weigh 3 to 5 ounces at birth, but will reach about 1,000 times that size when fully grown.
- Fully grown females weigh 155 to 220 pounds and fully grown males weigh 190 to 275 pounds.
- They are about five to six feet long and two to three feet tall.
- Pandas are arguably the most vocal of all the bears, with a distinctive “bleat” sound, but scientists have identified 12 different sounds they can make.
- They have a lifespan of 15 to 30 years.
