The Coronado Police Department received a call at 11 p.m. last night from a woman who reported that her son was suicidal and sitting in his van midspan on the Coronado Bridge.
A press release from the police department said that officers arrived on scene and attempted to stop the vehicle from driving away, but the driver fled to a parking lot on 2nd Street, refused to exit his vehicle, and repeatedly rammed into the two Coronado patrol cars.
Officers were able to spike the vehicle, disabling it a few blocks away from the apartment complex. The driver then began throwing objects at the officers.
The release stated that the National City Police Department arrived on the scene and deployed their K9, or police dog. The driver assaulted the K9 with a wrench.
After several pepper ball deployments, the subject surrendered. He was taken into custody and transported to a San Diego area hospital. The K9 was taken to a veterinary hospital for evaluation.
The subject, a 26-year-old Santee resident, is being charged with a DUI, evading, assault with a deadly weapon on a police officer and firefighter, resisting arrest, felony vandalism and willfully harming a peace officer canine.
