“Where Has My Toe Been?” written and published by Coronado resident Amber Boster, follows the tale of an adventurous little girl named Sam who has a fascination with putting her toes in her mouth, but with the gentle guidance of her mom, she realizes her feet have been on quite the journey.

A children’s book that recaps the adventures of a spirited young girl captures the curiosity of childhood while telling a lesson on hygiene and cleanliness.

Taking inspiration from her kids

Boster, a Navy veteran, was inspired to write her first children’s book after taking inspiration from her own experiences as a mom.

“This book kind of takes the pieces from all three of my kids,” said Boster. “When they were young, they’d sit in front of the TV and actually put their feet in their mouth and I’d tell them, ‘please stop, you have no idea what you’ve stepped in today.’ A lot of kids do this apparently, I’ve heard from other parents. So I figured, well if a lot of kids do this, maybe it’s a chance for them to actually think about what they did that day.”

Although her kids are now in their 20s, Boster still looks back fondly on the early memories of her and her husband reading to them every night. Her book is intended to pass on those special moments to other families.

“Children’s books are so important because they help you really create those long term memories. It was always really important for us to spend that quality time with the kids in the evening, especially with hectic days,” said Boster. “I thought this could be a chance for me to put something out there that gives new parents an opportunity to share some quality time with their kids as well.”

Captures the curiosity of childhood

Boster made the move to self-publish the book after letting it sit on her computer desktop for 10 years. Now that it’s finally out there, she hopes readers will be inspired to have similar conversations as Sam and her mom.

“Whether it’s a parent, grandparent, relative, friend – between them and the child, the goal was to have them look back on the day and what the child enjoys, while also creating excitement for what could be tomorrow’s next adventure together,” said Boster.

As a mom who is long past the days of reading to her kids, Boster is happy to have published something they can still appreciate.

“I’m most proud that my kids actually think the book is pretty great,” said Boster. “I mean, anybody could say anything about it, but my kids love it and that means the world to me.”
