When it’s time for children to go to bed, they often find ways to delay the process. Some ask for snacks, others want stories, and many request a glass of water. Similarly, even though our dogs cannot make these requests verbally, they have their ways of prolonging the inevitable bedtime.
One Pug’s efforts to extend her waking hours are becoming quite a workout for Mom. Hopefully, everyone will sleep soundly after this.
Check out these high-energy tactics in a video shared on April 18:
@lily.bean55But mom, I’m not ready to go to bed yet #pugsoftiktokpuglife #pugs #pugsoftiktok #puppy #puglove #babypugs #lily #zoomies #backyard #playing #bedtime
Lily (@lily.bean55) is giving her mom quite a workout! Even though it may be time to sleep, she has other plans in mind. It’s far more fun for mom to chase her around the yard than it is to settle down. She’s all too aware that her fast and nimble body cannot easily be captured. And she is making the most of it! This little trickster even makes it appear like she’s about to head inside but then pivots and runs away again. Lol! It’s like she’s playing a game of ‘Catch me if you can!’ Pet parents can attest that it’s equally frustrating and humorous when our cherished dogs behave this way.

Teaching dogs to obey commands
Well-behaved dogs, like Lily, may occasionally have moments when they want to run and play. Experts recommend being mindful of our tone in these situations. Much like a child, dogs are unlikely to respond to frustration or negativity. Instead, we should encourage them to do what we ask by rewarding them with a small treat or praise. However, my dogs also like to play this bedtime game, so they are taken out on leashes for their last evening potty break. Even though they may come when called during the day, something about the night air makes them a little misbehaved.
People offered their advice on getting to bed faster. Viewer @ZedlavZedlav responded, “The best advice for Pug owners is not to chase them! It only makes it worse for you and funner for them!” There’s no doubt about it. Viewer @BlueOdiamond proposed, “Just say the magic word: chicken.” Ha! That is a word that can work some magic. Viewer @All_nightowl remarked, “You know the only one tired after that will be you.” That’s the truth!
Even though our dogs might not do what we ask when we let them out in the evening, they have a unique way of making us laugh. Perhaps they know that ending our day with a bit of humor is something we need even more than sleep.
