With April being the Month of the Military Child and Coronado being a military town (34% of CUSD’s students are military children), many attendees wore purple to honor military children at the April 18 school board meeting.

Kelly Fortson, who runs the Anchors for Life program at Village Elementary School, shared about the program and introduced two 5th-grade team leaders, who each shared their experiences in the program.

CHS seniors Kyle Kuester and Aiden Anderson, members of the high school’s Navy Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps (NJROTC) program, also shared their experiences as military children in CUSD.

“There is a very like-minded community that [students] are put into with a lot of people who have similar experiences to [them],” Anderson said.

Kuester, who has attended three different high schools in the past four years, said CHS excels in establishing a community for military children through its clubs and programs like NJROTC.

“The majority of JROTC cadets are military children, and that really helps us fit in immediately,” Kuester said.
