As animal lovers, it’s painful to imagine what dogs once used for fighting must have experienced. Not only did they lack the love and care all animals deserve, but many were also punished for their natural behaviors. So, it’s a wonder that many find ways to forgive humans and instead look forward to a brighter future.

This former fighting dog not only opened his heart to being loved, but he also learned to be himself without fear. It’s a story that will touch your heart.

Former fighting dog lives his best life

Scooby’s dad reports he continues to show signs of progress daily, especially when interacting with humans. As a fighting dog, he was trained to be noiseless, so this sweet boy had never barked. That’s why his dad worked hard to allow his son to have a voice of his own. Initially, he was so timid that his sounds were like a tiny puppy yipping. Now, he barks with a powerful voice without fear of consequences. His father describes, “I’m so proud of him for finding his confidence to express himself when he feels like it.” He shares that Scooby also wags his tail and presses his nose against his face to kiss him. Though his beginning was tough, his future looks bright.

How long does it take for a dog to feel at home?

Although every dog is different, experts suggest using the 3-3-3 rule as a guideline. In the first three days, a new dog might feel terrified or overwhelmed in their new environment, and most will take at least three days to feel confident and settle in. After three weeks, they will feel more relaxed in their new environment and become more familiar with daily routines. And by the time they have been with us for three months, it will feel like their place. When they know they are safe, they can truly be themselves. However, dogs that have experienced significant trauma or abuse might require us to have a little more patience, as they can understandably take a little longer to trust again.

With love and patience, even dogs that have experienced significant abuse and neglect can become everything they are meant to be. In return, they offer us their unwavering loyalty and support for the rest of their days.
