In the midst of budget uncertainty and employee cuts, the Coronado Unified School District (CUSD) recognized their community partners — nonprofit organizations and parents — who bring in funding streams from outside of the district.

“I am really just overwhelmed with gratitude,” District Superintendent Karl Mueller said. “…In particular, in times of budget uncertainty, we can only provide the essentials, and that’s where all of our partners come in and provide the enrichment and support that make this district so special.”

At the special governing board meeting on March 26, 11 community partners all provided brief informational presentations on their mission and funding reach.

“We have in this room tonight the people that I have always considered to be the secret sauce of CUSD,” Maria Simon, the public information officer for the district, said. “They work so hard…They’re the can-do people, the ones that never complain, they find ways to get things done and they always come through for us.”

The school district has a long list of community partners, 11 of which had a representative to speak at the meeting on March 26.

The Coronado Schools Foundation, the Coronado School of the Arts Foundation and the Islander Sports Foundation provided presentations, along with the parent-teacher organizations for Coronado Middle School, the high school, Village Elementary School and Silver Strand Elementary School.

Also represented at the podium were the band and choir boosters, military life counselors, Safe Harbor Coronado and Emerald Keepers.

In other matters

The board adopted a resolution to file with the California Governor’s Office of Emergency services seeking funds to recoup losses from the flooding on Jan. 22.

“The district expects to get a majority of our expenses reimbursed by the insurance company,” Deputy Superintendent Donnie Salamanca said. “In the event that a claim is denied by the insurance, this allows us to apply for funds through the Office of Emergency services, so we’re really just trying to have all of our bases covered in the event that something is denied.”

A Budget Study Committee meeting is scheduled on April 17 at 3:45 p.m.

The next regular board meeting is set for 4 p.m. on Thursday, April 18 at the district office.
