“Thinking about how my family sold me to slaughter as a baby,” the text on the screen reads while a cow looks into a field. “But then a miracle happened,” the text says, and a happy cow runs along the grass before switching to another scene of a sweet, contented cow resting its head on the ground while someone lovingly brushes his head.

“Someone pulled me out of that dark place,” the text continued,” and brought me somewhere I’ll be safe forever.”

The video shows some really adorable snippets of life at The Gentle Barn, including cows running together, listening to someone play the guitar and playing with a ball outside.

“Now I’m happier than I could’ve ever imagined,” the video concludes.

In the video’s caption, we learn a little more about Captain. “Captain is the nicest guy, who plays just like a giant dog, joyfully leaps around the barnyard, and loves everyone around him,” the caption reads.

“His story could’ve been very different, but instead, he’s celebrating his 7th birthday, loved and happy at The Gentle Barn Tennessee! Please join us in wishing a happy birthday to Captain!” the write-up concluded.

In the comments, people were happy to leave some love for Captain, too.

“The jumps,” one person wrote.

“Makes me smile seeing him jump & run,” another added. “A happy boy.”

“Such an angel. Every cow and animal deserves this; after all, they’re just big kids,” someone else shared.

More about the work at The Gentle Barn

According to the sanctuary’s website, The Gentle Barn was founded in 1999, a years-long dream of Ellie Laks, who, along with Jay Weiner, made their dreams come true, and for many animals, too.

The barn started on a half-acre property before expanding to six acres years later. Now, they care for 200 animals in Santa Clarita, California.

They also opened another barn in Nashville, Tennessee, and a third in St Louis, Missouri.

Captain is one of 40 rescue cows who live at the sanctuary. “Captain America was named by the little boy who raised him and loved him,” the sanctuary shares. “Sadly, at almost a year old, Captain was sold and sent to slaughter. Miraculously, a family friend found Captain, saved his life, and brought him to The Gentle Barn to live out the rest of his life with love, family, safety, and joy.”

Happy birthday, Captain!
