After falling to No. 1 ranked Bishop’s in the CIF Open Division playoffs last year, the 2024 Coronado High School boys lacrosse team is motivated to compete for a CIF title and avenge their 2023 postseason loss.

“I expect to have the same tough, disciplined, high spirited team that has been the hallmark of Coronado lacrosse for the past 23 years.”

Alex Cade, CHS Lacrosse Head Coach

“I expect to have the same tough, disciplined, high spirited team that has been the hallmark of Coronado lacrosse for the past 23 years. As always we expect to compete for a CIF Open division title,” Head Coach Alex Cade said.

This year’s squad is highlighted by a group with significant varsity experience, as Cade explained that many of their starters have been getting playing time on varsity since they were freshmen.

Lead by Seniors

Seniors Vin Garden, Charlie Laing, Ryder Moore, Luca Salata and Matt Tetzlaff will lead a team known for “tough, hard fighting and gritty play with explosive transition offense and disciplined settled defense” according to Cade.

Cade emphasized the team’s defensive prowess, naming defenders Jonah York and Moore as impact players, along with goalie Laing.

“I would say top to bottom our defense is our strength this year,” Cade said. “The better conditioned your athletes are, the more you can keep your top talent on the field in big moments.”

Team focused

Although star players and flashy plays are exciting to watch, Cade explained that he does not work to feature one player in his system but rather the team as a whole.

“We focus on systems and a group dynamics mentality,” he said. “Always looking to support your teammate first as a mentality.”

Despite the tough loss in last season’s playoffs, Cade says the team is focused on improving one step at a time.

“We did not have our best game the last one of the year but Bishop’s was also a great opponent,” he said. “Our boys have been motivated to build upon last season and work hard to do so but we have not focused on a certain game of the past. They have their head over their feet and are just working hard to improve.”
