If you take daily walks with your pup, you know it can be a great way to spend time together. Not only does it get out excess energy for your four-legged friend, but it’s also got tons of mental health benefits for us as well. One Shepadoodle mom, @oatleythesheepadoodle, is giving her followers some great tips to elevate your walks.

She brings up some great points and you may want to add them into your own routine!

@oatleythesheepadoodleour routine is nothing groundbreaking but I truly thinking having these 3 things mixed in your walk will keep your dog happy & tired!

This is all great advice. I particularly love the idea of bringing along a toy that they can chase during the outing.

Taking your dog for a walk is no doubt the best part of their day. Although dog walking may seem fairly straightforward, making a walk successful requires some preparation and training. Here are some more tips to make your outing with your pooch all the more enjoyable.

Tips to level up your walk

  • Get the right leash: New dog parents often struggle with walking because of their choice of gear. The type of leash you choose makes a big difference in your walking experience. Make sure you research what leash works best for you and your dog.
  • Start Slow: When it comes to walking, you want to start teaching dogs about properly walking as early as possible. However, if you give a puppy, you need to be mindful about tiring them out. Usually, 20 minutes is the maximum amount of time they should be on a walk. Over time, you can work up to longer walks as they get older.
  • Stick to a Routine: While your dog gets used to going for walks, it’s always a good idea to create and maintain a routine. To do this, walk them at the same time every day and follow the same route. This will teach dogs how they are expected to behave and it also helps them stay calm when they know exactly where you’re walking them.
  • Bring Treats: Of course, bringing treats is always a good idea when you’re on a walk. A dog will be more inclined to listen to you and pay attention when you have treats in tow. This will help you if they become unfocused and start to lose attention while on your walk.

If you keep working at it, you and your fur buddy will be walking like pros in no time!
