Stray cats may seem a little bit intimidating, but really, they can be won over. After a tough bout of loneliness, aren’t we all a little bit closed off?
On Thursday, November 30th, one cat rescuer shared the journey her former-feral cat went through, and his transformation is just beautiful:

Mittens the Rescue Cat is so lucky a nice family was able to take him in. Videos like this make it abundantly clear that all he needed was a little bit of love!

Rescuing a feral cat is a lengthy process, especially when you have other pets. Introducing them needs to done slowly, and above all, safely. Stray cats are often unvaccinated cats that could be carrying parasites, diseases, or fleas. As badly as I’m sure Mittens’ mama wanted to let him in right then, she did just the right thing keeping that door shut.
Mittens, according to his adoptive parents, was shot with a BB gun before being rescued, and that right there is one of the biggest issues outdoor cat parents have. Though it’s unfathomable to many that someone could be unkind to animals, many are. Rowdy teens looking for trouble often take out their energy on stray animals. Some say black cats like Mittens get it even worse in terms of street abuse, but the evidence for this isn’t conclusive.
What is conclusive, however, is that black cats are much less likely to be adopted from shelters. Most families gravitate toward the lighter colored kitties. Mittens lucked out here – very much. As we can see from the video, it took Mittens a little while to warm up, and that is to be expected. If you’re rescuing a stray, managed your expectations: snuggles and adoration right away just doesn’t always work out.
In an interesting turn of events, his parents actually got him a kitten to keep him company, and that really seems to have helped him open up. Stray cats will sometimes form packs, and having something to care for may have been just what Mittens needed to get his mind off of everything he’s been through!
