With Christmas ending and signaling in a new year, there are plenty of exciting things coming to Coronado in 2024.
Start off your year on a high note by checking out these local events in January.
3 Wednesday: Starting Jan. 3, Charles Kamar will teach a 10 session course titled “Poetry for the People.” This year, the focus will be on works by U.S. poet laureates.
U.S. poet laureates serve as our nation’s official poets. They seek “to raise the national consciousness to a greater appreciation of the reading of poetry.”
The class will discuss their poems and learn about their life highlights, while considering the techniques and use of language that distinguish these poets.
Kamar received his bachelor’s from Boston State and his master’s from Boston University. He taught for 34 years in the Newton Public Schools, the last 20 of which at Newton North High School. In 1998 he won the Paul E. Elicker Award for Excellence in Teaching.

3 Wednesday: Film Forum Coronado takes place in the Winn Room of the public library the first and third Wednesday of each month at 6 p.m.
Film expert Ralph DeLauro provides a brief introduction to each film and leads a discussion afterwards, often including pointers about how lighting or camera angles contribute to a scene’s mood or propel the story.
4 Thursday: Author Dale Halaway will present his book “Being Called to Change” in the Winn Room of the public library from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m.
“Being Called to Change,” is an opportunity for introspection and to create a plan for your New Year’s resolutions that may be applied to understand the nature of change, how to recognize when it’s knocking on your door and then embrace change in your life.

6 Saturday: Learn how to prune roses on at the Harlow Rose Garden in front of the Library. Please bring sharp bypass pruners and gloves to participate in this hands-on workshop.
The event is open to the public at 9:30 a.m. and is led by Consulting Rosarian and Master Gardener Rita Perwich and Master Gardeners Maria Mata and Carvill Veech.
This event is also an opportunity to get information about fertilizing roses, as well as dealing with pests and fungal diseases.
6 Saturday: Would you like to make a lasting memory and connect with a child in your life? You can, with Storybook Inspirations.
This is a great opportunity for grandparents, divorced parents, active duty military and others who live far from the special children in their lives to keep their bonds strong through the magic of shared stories.
In private, one-on-one 30-minute sessions, trained volunteers will film participants reading a children’s book aloud for a child who is special to them.
The volunteers will help prepare participants, ensuring they feel comfortable and confident. Once the video footage is finalized, participants will be sent a secure, shareable YouTube link to their video.
Storybook Inspirations will be at the library the third Wednesday of each month from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. in the Digital Media Lab, and the first Saturday of every month from 10:30-12:30 in the Ruby Room.

7 Sunday: Art in the Park features more than fifty top artists in every genre including oil, acrylic and watercolor painting, etching, photography, wood and metal working, stained glass, ceramics and a variety of other unusual and distinctive art forms.
The artists whose work is on display reside throughout San Diego County. They have been selected by a five person jurying process to ensure consistent professional quality and originality. Many are represented in galleries and specialty shops throughout the San Diego area. Some have their own gallery/studios.
Participating artists show their work with us to enjoy the direct interaction with the art buying public. The artists must show their own work, so you are assured of the opportunity to converse with the actual creator of any art piece on display.
