A sewage spill from damaged Coronado wastewater infrastructure forced the closure of Glorietta Bay on July 16, but the popular recreation area opened as of 4:30 p.m. on July 17.
Kaylee Ricci, the city’s communications officer, told The Coronado News that the cause of the incident is still being evaluated.
“City staff responded promptly, and the issue has been addressed,” Ricci said.
The County of San Diego manages beach closures and water quality testing, and determined when the closure lifted.
“Some wastewater entered Glorietta Bay. In accordance with protocols, Glorietta Bay was posted as closed,” the city said in a statement.
The bay is a popular area for swimming and water sports such as paddleboarding and kayaking, with children drawn to play areas in the adjacent park. No estimate was provided concerning how much untreated wastewater entered the water.
The incident occurred near the intersection of Glorietta Boulevard and Monterey Avenue, adjacent to the golf course where it meets the bay.
