Coronado’s Morgan Maske and Rafael Roos were the top runners for the Islanders at the Hoka Postal on Oct. 28, when more than 750 runners competed in 2-mile races at University City High School.
There were 18 different races, and coaches submitted estimates of how fast their
athletes could run and were seeded accordingly.
Maske tops for girls team
For Coronado’s girls, the top five were was Morgan Maske, with a time of 12:23,
Gwynne Letcher (12:36), Carly DeVore (12:37), Nadia Roos (12:56), and Maesan
Everitt (13:20). The pusher was Stefanie Romero.
The cumulative times from the top five girls ranks Coronado 30th in the state and 92nd nationally in the Hoka competition, according to Coach George Green.
“California is one of the most competitive states and considering these ranks are not based on division, grade level, or school size, these are pretty good results for four freshmen and one sophomore (Maske),” Green said.
Roos leads the boys team
The top boys finisher for Coronado was senior Rafael Roos with a time of 10:20.
Sophomore Nathan Ayan had the next best time with a mark of 10:46, followed by Jack Letcher (11:17), Xavier Marsh (11:39), and Tyler Horton (12:07).
The other finishers in order were Jack Shumaker, Austin Litteral, Oscar Alicandri, Carlos Pulido, Philippe Solla, and Oliver Surdykowski.
League finals Nov. 2
Coronado’s next race will be the league finals on Nov. 2, where all the runners will compete, Green said.
The CIF championships are Nov. 11, where only seven boys and seven girls from
each team are allowed to compete, according to Green.
He said Coronado’s girls’ team may qualify for the state meet in Fresno on Nov. 25.
To advance, Coronado must place among the top three teams in its division at the CIF championships.
