Here’s a rundown of numerous events at the Coronado Public Library starting on Sept. 1.
1 Friday – The Coronado Public Library is pleased to announce the return of its annual Autumn Concert Series. The library will host a different musician each Friday at 1 p.m. beginning on Sept. 1 and running through Nov. 3.
The inaugural concert at on Sept. 1 in the Winn Room features Sergio D Tala, a guitarist
who plays Mediterranean music, Latin Jazz and World Music.
Now in its 11th year, the Autumn Concert Series began as a brown bag lunch concert for attendees to bring a snack to enjoy while listening to piano music. It has evolved to encompass many different musical forms. This year, the following musicians are scheduled to play Sachiko Rieners (piano), Irina Bessonova (piano), Brian Verhoye (piano), Ron Wheeler (guitar), Peter Ko (cello), Jeryoung Lee (piano), Adam Hostomsky (piano), Tae Yeon Lin (piano), and Kenneth Brown (piano).
With music from salsa to the classics, this series will have something everyone can enjoy.
The Winn Room doors will open to the public 15 minutes prior to each performance.
4 Monday – The Library and Coronado City Hall will be closed in observance of Labor Day.
5 Tuesday – Coronado Public Library’s Tinker Tuesday is back for the school year at 3:30 p.m. in the Ruby Room, and the theme is Stained-Glass Art.
Using a picture frame and glass mosaic tiles, kids will make their own stained-glass art.
Tinker Tuesdays is a hands-on educational program that allows children to explore, create, design, and problem solve focusing on STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math) concepts. It takes place every Tuesday during the school year.
Every other week, Tinker Tuesday does an art project, and these are made possible by the Jim and Bette T. Sherman Fund.
6 Wednesday – The library, in partnership with the Coronado Island Film Festival, presents Film Forum Coronado, taking place the first and third Wednesday of each month at 6:00 p.m. in the Winn Room.
Film expert Ralph DeLauro provides a brief introduction to each film and leads a discussion afterwards, often including pointers about how lighting or camera angles contribute to a scene’s mood or propel the story.
The Sept. 6 film is “Take the Money and Run.” (1969, 85 min). It’s Woody Allen’s first film as actor, director and writer is a zany, absurdist screwball comedy about a bumbling bank robber (Allen), destitute and in love, who attempts to lead a life of crime to provide for his beloved wife (Janet Margolin).
7 Thursday – Bestselling local author/San Diego Union-Tribune language columnist Richard Lederer and musical comedian Bill Shipper team up to present “Dances with Words,” a double dose of wordplay in music and song at 7 p.m. in the Winn Room.
These two verbaholic dueling punsters present memorable musicality, rhythmic rhymes,
tons of tonality, and heaps of hilarity, all with gracious grammar and alluring alliteration.
Celebrating the crazy world of the English language with topics such as musical idioms,
wordplay, limericks and the circus, “Dances with Words” is truly “edutainment” –
learning dressed up to have fun.
