If you see banners lining Third and Fourth streets from Orange Avenue to the Naval Air Station North Island, it’s for Coronado’s very own “hometown heroes.”
The Avenue of Heroes Committee is hosting a dedication ceremony to honor the latest group of hometown military veterans and active-duty service members on May 20, at Coronado High School.
The ceremony will go from 10:30 am to noon at the school’s Performing Arts Center.
Introduced in 2014 by the City, VFW Post 2422, the Third & Fourth Streets Neighborhood Association, and the Coronado Historical Association, the Avenue of Heroes Committee program honors men and women from Coronado.
Hometown Heroes
There will be 15 “hometown heroes” as Coronado fondly calls them who will be recognized and honored as part of the Avenue of Heroes Committee program.
Honorees may be living or deceased and past or present residents in the city, including being stationed at Naval Base Coronado.
The Avenue of Heroes is a military service recognition program sponsored by the City of Coronado and the Avenue of Heroes Committee. The program is a way for the community to honor the many men and women who have considered Coronado their home during their military careers.
The “Coronado Avenue of Heroes” will see these banners from May 15 through October.
