On the corner of Orange and B avenues, a fiesta meets the beach.
In the fall of 2023, Blanco Cocina + Cantina, a Sonoran-style Mexican restaurant, will make its official debut at 1301 Orange Ave.
The name, familiar to San Diego because of Blanco Tacos + Tequila in Fashion Valley Mall, is another addition of Fox Restaurant Concepts, the company that opened The Henry just down Orange Avenue in 2019.
The company was founded by Coronado resident Sam Fox, a James Beard Nominee which recognizes exceptional talent and achievement in the culinary arts, hospitality, media and broader food system.
Fox Restaurant Concepts has nearly 5,000 employees and over 60 restaurant locations across the U.S. including Flower Child, Culinary Dropout, Dough Bird, Wildflower and The Henry, a popular Coronado eatery.
According to Emma Elmes, regional manager of Blanco Cocina + Cantina, Fox felt that Coronado was the perfect spot to feature another one of their “cool and fun concepts” after the success of The Henry.
“Blanco and Coronado are made for one another,” Fox said in a statement provided to The Coronado News. “They both offer something special that really draws people in.”
The restaurant will host large family-style booths and tables for family get-togethers, encompassing the fun Mexican party atmosphere, said Elmes.
“Our Blanco restaurants are classy and elegant with many cool light fixtures and wall murals,” said Elmes. “We are excited to bring a slightly different look to Coronado being so close to the beach. Our design team is having so much fun on this project.”
Customers can look forward to dishes that stray from a typical San Diegan Mexican restaurant, such as tacos served on handmade corn tortillas, short rib machaca nachos and Blanco’s staple cheese crisps.
“Think of a Mexican pizza,” said Elmes, describing the iconic crisps.
The Mexican cuisine will come from a scratch kitchen, made fresh daily.
The menu also will feature classic and unique margaritas, along with interesting tequila flights, Elmes said.
