Coronado High School cross country athletes embark on a new season and look to build on times established after the Vaquero Stampede Cross Country Invitational where three Islanders finished in the top 50 runners across their divisions.
Coronado High School cross country began its 2026 season at the Vaquero Stampede on Aug. 22 where 15 Islanders completed a 2-mile course at Lindo Lake County Park.
“The Vaquero Stampede gave the Islanders their first opportunity of the season to compete against a large field and establish an early benchmark,” said Pete Wilson, the CHS cross country head coach, in a statement. “…Coronado now has its first set of race results to build upon as the season moves forward.”
According to Wilson, several Coronado runners turned in strong early-season performances.
Evan Russo, a sophomore, led the Coronado boys finishing No. 20 out of 367 runners in the boys freshman and sophomore competition with a time of 11:26.04.
Seniors Vivian Scott and Carly DeVore led the Islanders, finishing No. 35 and No. 38, respectively, out of 154 runners in the girls junior and senior competition. They ran under 15 minutes.
Junior Teaghan Carpinito, finishing as No. 61, and senior Lily Humphrey, No. 74, gave Coronado four finishers in the division, according to Wilson.
Wilson said Diego Ibarra Cruz also made a name for himself in his cross country debut. The sophomore was No. 140 in the boys’ underclassmen competition.
“With limited distance-running experience and training entering the season, Ibarra Cruz’s performance was a promising debut in a large field,” said Wilson.
Wilson said Ayrton Reyes, a sophomore earning No. 88 in the race, also had a strong opening race.
Sophomore Jacob Ingold was No. 186, while sophomore Jameson Laaperi was No. 198.
Wilson said Felix Scott, a freshman, and Daniel Turner, a sophomore, rounded out Coronado’s boys freshmen and sophomore finishers.
Ziggy Raunig, a junior, led Coronado as No. 122 out of 299 runners. Also representing the Islanders in the boys’ upperclassmen competition were juniors Timothy Gilbert and Wyatt Barratt, and senior Oliver Surdykowski.
The Islanders’ next competition is Sept. 5 at the CCA Ravens Invitational.
